VENTURA, California - U.S. Army Specialist Alexis Hutchinson, a single mother, is being threatened with a military court-martial if she does not agree to deploy to Afghanistan, despite having been told she would be granted extra time to find someone to care for her 11-month-old son while she is overseas. Hutchinson, of Oakland, California, is currently being confined at Hunter Army Airfield near Savannah, Georgia, after being arrested. Her son was placed into a county foster care system. Hutchinson has been threatened with a court martial if she does not agree to deploy to Afghanistan on Sunday, Nov. 15. She has been attempting to find someone to take care of her child, Kamani, while she is deployed overseas, but to no avail. According to the family care plan of the U.S. Army, Hutchinson was allowed to fly to California and leave her son with her mother, Angelique Hughes of Oakland. However, after a week of caring for the child, Hughes realised she was unable to care for Kamani along with her other duties of caring for a daughter with special needs, her ailing mother, and an ailing sister. In late October, Angelique Hughes told Hutchinson and her commander that she would be unable to care for Kamani after all. The Army then gave Hutchinson an extension of time to allow her to find someone else to care for Kamani. Meanwhile, Hughes brought Kamani back to Georgia to be with his mother. However, only a few days before Hutchinson's original deployment date, she was told by the Army she would not get the time extension after all, and would have to deploy, despite not having found anyone to care for her child. Faced with this choice, Hutchinson chose not to show up for her plane to Afghanistan. The military arrested her and placed her child in the county foster care system. Currently, Hutchinson is scheduled to fly to Afghanistan on Sunday for a special court martial, where she then faces up to one year in jail. Hutchinson's civilian lawyer, Rai Sue Sussman, told IPS, "The core issue is that they are asking her to make an inhumane choice. She did not have a complete family care plan, meaning she did not find someone to provide long-term care for her child. She's required to have a complete family care plan, and was told she'd have an extension, but then they changed it on her." Asked why she believes the military revoked Hutchinson's extension, Sussman responded, "I think they didn't believe her that she was unable to find someone to care for her infant. They think she's just trying to get out of her deployment. But she's just trying to find someone she can trust to take care of her baby." Hutchinson's mother has flown to Georgia to retrieve the baby, but is overwhelmed and does not feel able to provide long-term care for the child. According to Sussman, the soldier needs more time to find someone to care for her infant, but does not as yet have friends or family able to do so. Sussman says Hutchinson told her, "It is outrageous that they would deploy a single mother without a complete and current family care plan. I would like to find someone I trust who can take care of my son, but I cannot force my family to do this. They are dealing with their own health issues." Sussman told IPS that the Army's JAG attorney, Captain Ed Whitford, "told me they thought her chain of command thought she was trying to get out of her deployment by using her child as an excuse." ' Major Gallagher, of Hutchinson's unit, also told Sussman that he did not believe it was a real family crisis, and that Hutchinson's "mother should have been able to take care of the baby". In addition, according to Sussman, a First Sergeant Gephart "told me he thought she [Hutchinson] was pulling her family care plan stuff to get out of her deployment". "To me it sounds completely bogus," Sussman told IPS, "I think what they are actually going to do is have her spend her year deployment in Afghanistan, then court martial her back here upon her return. This would do irreparable harm to her child. I think they are doing this to punish her, because they think she is lying." Sussman explained that she believes the best possible outcome is for the Army to either give Hutchinson the extension they had said she would receive so that she can find someone to care for her infant, or barring this, to simply discharge her so she can take care of her child. Nevertheless, Hutchinson is simply asking for the time extension to complete her family care plan, and not to be discharged. "I'm outraged by this," Sussman told IPS, "I've never gone to the media with a military client, but this situation is just completely over the top."Army Sends Infant to Protective Services, Mom to Afghanistan
...But as I watch the internecine fighting amongst Democrats over non-issues like abortion in the health care "reform" bill working its way through Congress, I see only one outcome.
That being a hollowed out shell of a bill that give everything to the insurance industry while only paying lip service to a public option. To be at all viable, the public option has to be open to ALL Americans, otherwise the few million that will be able to enroll in a public option will be too few to have any affect at all on private insurance premiums and services.
Let's get real here. The parliament of whores we call "Congress" is going to roll over and spread their collective legs for the insurance industry just to keep the money rolling in. I hope I'm wrong, but time and experience show me I'm not.
Thanksgiving Recipes
These are family recipes perfected over the years. I thought I’d post them a little early because the main gravy ingredient (the turkey necks and wings) is not generally available in the meat isle – I’ve always had to pre-order from the butcher.
Classic Kick-Ass Homemade Turkey Gravy
*Denny Hastert gives it 4 out of 4 stars! “Mmmm, gravy…”*
Gravy Stock:
Prepare the day before – refrigerate in airtight container. (Can be done the day of, but is much easier if done in advance!)
6 lbs. Turkey wings and necks (I do 3 and 3)
6 ribs of celery, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
12 cups chicken broth/stock
Preheat oven to 400°
In large roasting pan, sauté wings, necks, celery and onion on the stove until the turkey parts begin to brown – about 10 minutes.
Transfer to oven – roast 45 minutes. Turn all the pieces, and roast another 45 minutes.
Add chicken broth/stock and roast one more hour.
Strain the stock and dispose of the turkey parts, etc. Cool the stock and store in refrigerator over night.
Finishing Gravy (Thanksgiving Day):
8 cups gravy stock from above (should be all of it!)
1 stick butter
½ cup flour
1 tbsp. cider vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste
In a large pot, melt butter on the stove. Whisk in the flour and cook about 1-2 minutes stirring constantly.
Add the gravy stock, whisking until blended. Simmer a few minutes to thicken then reduce heat.
Finish with vinegar and season to taste.
Bread Dressing From Hell!
I like a dry dressing – can always reconstitute with: Mmmm, gravy. For those who like a wetter dressing – you can add more broth!
2 loaves unseasoned dressing bread (if seasoned, omit sage, thyme below)
1 stick butter
2 cups celery, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
1 medium carrot, chopped
3 tsp. ground sage
1 tsp. thyme
Chicken broth
Optional:
1 cup sautéed mushrooms (partially sautéed in advance to remove water)
1½ cups roasted, chopped pecans or walnuts (roast in oven at 350° for 10-15 minutes until they render some of their oil and begin to become fragrant – do not over-brown!)
Night before:
Break up dressing bread in to pieces and place in a flat baking pan or on baking sheets to dry. I find that it is best to put them in the oven (cold oven!) overnight to avoid pet interference. Just remember to remove in the morning before you preheat the oven (I’ve made that mistake more than once!)
Finishing Stuffing (Thanksgiving Day):
Butter a large baking dish – set aside.
In large pot on the stove, sauté celery, onion and carrot in butter until soft (not brown).
Add salt, pepper (to taste), sage, thyme (if using unseasoned bread).
Add bread to vegetable mixture (and optional mushrooms and nuts). Stir to combine.
Add chicken broth – mix – just enough to hold everything together (more if you prefer a wetter dressing).
Spoon into large baking dish.
*Note: may be done ahead (day of) to this point.
Bake in 375° oven for 45 minutes – or until crispy on top.
Hey, 'Merica, I'm goin to ma Insty-toot to write down some stuff...
Has anyone seen the two op-eds in today's New York Times? Tom Brokaw's favorite Republican hack, Alex Castellanos, got top billing with the following: "Finally, An Authentic G.O,P." (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/opinion/05castellanos.html?_r=1&ref=opinion). According to him, the Republicans won in Virginia and New Jersey because they didn't hide their conservatism and this election was a big rebuke of Obama. Of course, everyone else in the world says the exact opposite.
In fact, at the bottom of the same page, Gail Collins does just that in "Hark! The Voters Speak!" (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/opinion/05collins.html?ref=opinion). She makes it clear that the gubernatorial results were anything but a rebuke of Obama: "It all worked out great, and I hope Obama has gotten the message. Really, he had better shape up and completely transform the way Washington works before the next election. Otherwise, another governor’s head could roll." Why didn't the Times print Collins's article only and tell Castellanos to just shut up?
P.G.
62% of the American people in 9 polls said they favor a public insurance option. Unfortunately the TV or CNN does not seem to understand this.
Oh, Ali, tell us why "public insurance is so unpopular".

While I can only watch the implosion of the GOP with a measure of schadenfreude, I cannot help but feel a bit queasy as I watch it unfold. It could go one of two ways...The GOP going the way of the Whigs, which I hope for. Or it could in a direction which will leave us looking back with a measure of charity on Nazi Germany in the days leading up to WW II. I tend to expect the worst and hope for the best.
Kinda like "Dick in a Box." Or masturbation. It's just not the same. I hope Jim is just doing some sleep-depravation-deficit-reduction or has a $$$$$ gig this week that pays better that the Stephanie Miller Poverty Newscast International.
Does anyone know what has happened to Jim Ward? He is no en casa. Mama is not mentioning his name in the beginning or the end of the show these last two days. On top of that, Jim's stand up news bits are being phoned in. This is giving me the heebie jeebies. Does anyone know what's up? I was worried that the inclusion of Hal Sparks, John Fugelsang and Lee Papa weekly didn't mean Jim was phasing out, but now I'm getting a bad feeling. Someone please tell me this isn't the end of our beloved mook on SMS.

After years of mis-hearing advertisements on the radio for "homo-nurse insurance" (homeowner's insurance), I now have another recurrent brain-bug.
Steph and the mooks have recently begun a regular tradition of announcing the status of the spiritual universe:
"The Tao is down 60 points...."
Republicans and the Internets. Not so much. People are having a field day since the RNC introduced their revamped gop.com. The Republicans bungled that sooo bad.
For one thing they didn't lock down the code good enough. Others were able to take the GOP's tiny Michael Steele and have him walking on to a number of web sites and talking, even the home page of Stephanie Miller International.
There were other gaffes, such as the administrative passwords and instructions being put on the New York section of the web site. As well as Steele's log in and password for his gmail account. Or the banner, which is being mocked quite a bit. Including making Sex on Skates Johnson a hero of the GOP. The future leaders section of the site was blank for a while after the launch.
Again, Republicans and the Internets. Not so much.

This is a few moments of Stephanie's opener at "Stephanie Miller and Bill press Uncensored" at the Barrymore Theater. This is very poor quality, but it's the best I could do.
Back in the dark days of George W. Bush's first administration right wing pundit, Charles Krauthammer coined the term "Bush Derangement Syndrome". He defined it as, "...the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of George W. Bush". This in reaction to justified and well founded criticism of Bush leading this nation into an unjustifiable war of choice against a nation which posed no credible threat to anyone outside its own borders.
When critics of the Bush administration would mutter darkly about the failures of the Bush administration in finding the WMD's that were the justification for the invasion of Iraq, failing to capture the perpetrators of 9/11, 9/11, New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the moribund US economy...in fact, any rational, fact based criticism of the Bush administration was dismissed as the "Bush Derangement Syndrome" of said critics.
Starting from day one of his administration, we have seen the onset of acute paranoia in America's right wing political establishment, right wing punditocracy and its slavish, benighted follower in reaction "to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of" Barack H. Obama. This reflexive and irrational hatred of President Obama was highlighted earlier this week when Chicago failed to get the nod for the Olympics. The airwaves, blogosphere and print media were filled with the howls of glee at the news that Obama's presence failed to secure a Chicago venue for the Olympics. It was only a short time before that that Congressman Joe Wilson astounded America by shouting "You lie!" at the President during an address to Congress, to the unbridled delight of the GOP's right wing-nut base.
And now we see the nearly fulminant outrage and ire on the right at Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. When any rational person would set aside their prejudices a feel a swell of pride for their country and their President, the right wing noise machine explodes in fury. With the likes of Rush Limbaugh stating that "we all agree with the Taliban and Iran about and that is he doesn't deserve the award...". Why do you hate America Rush?
We see America's right wing fully and deeply in the grip of an irrational and "acute paranoia in reaction to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of" Barack H. Obama. They are caught fully and inextricably in the hall of mirrors that is Obama Derangement Syndrome.

Does this mean he'll actually have to start dealing with reality. When the Rams keep losing, will Limbaugh report they are actually in fact winning? This could be rough on Rush. He's not used to having to deal with reality and actual "facts" He won't be able to twist losing as somehow being successful. As the last remaining fans don paper sacks over their heads, it might be too much for Limbaugh to take. Whaddya think?
