By popular demand, I am posting the instructions for setting up your avatar on the Live Blog (i.e. the little picture next to your posts):
You’ll need to go to http://gravatar.com and register using the e-mail address that you used at this site. You then upload the .jpg you wish to use as your avatar (the simpler, the better since it’s so small). Then Gravatar generates a key/cookie that this site will reference (process takes about five minutes). There ya’ go!
Until George get's the primer up as a FAQ,,, here it is

A few minutes ago I published a blog entitled "How to post a blog entry" In the blog I spoke a little about "washing" your text if you are writing it first in a word processing application, like MSWord. I'll post it again below.
I probably should have included "any time you use a text box here on stephspace do this," in the title and tags.
Just a few short moments ago I went to watch the video Shaf uploaded, Stephanie at WVKO/Democratic Party night 3/1/08 I noticed this in the video's description:

Here's a snippet from Stephanie's appearance at the WVKO/Democratic Party night on 3/1/08. BTW, WVKO changed from a progressive talk format to Catholic radio programming, provided by Columbus-based St. Gabriel Radio on December 23, 2008. As of this posting, Columbus is again without progressive radio.
Shaf hopefully as changed it by now. But when I saw it, it told me that Shaf had used a word processing program to write his description.
There is nothing wrong with that, I do it because currently there is not a spell check on the blog text box, nor does firefox spell check work on this right now. This dooms me, and I'm sure for a lot of others too.
There is a problem with that. MSWord (and other word processing programs) add a whole bunch of unneeded and unnecessary code for our purpose when you copy and paste. In a blog post it makes the file way to large. In a photo, video or audio description it gives you the kind of felder carb you see above. The only informational paragraph came at the end.
What one, you, anyone needs to do, if using a word processing program and then copy and pasting to Stephspace is "wash" it before putting it here.
Fortunately that's really, really, easy to do.
Open "Notepad" or some similar application. Copy your MSWord blog post and paste it in Notepad. Let the highlight of your words clear in notepad, then mouse over all your words in the notepad window and copy and paste to the text box on Stephspace.

Viola! Clean and you didn't even need Tide.

Blogs (or as they are called on DailyKos; dairies) are really easy and there is no need to be intimated by them. Especially if you have something to say.
There are several ways to get to the blog window. I’m going to tell you one way with the least amount of steps to get there.
When you first log into Stephspace you are on "my home" page. [Sigh] I fear this is going to turn into a "who's on first" bit. I'll explain this one time, or try to. You are on a page called "my page" you are not on MY page. It's your page.
If you are not on "my home" page you can get to it easily. It is the second tab on the first tab row on any page you are on in Stephspace. (in the yellow circle). You need to be on "my home" page.

Once there go "add a blog post" (Green circle) Okay I know this is my home page, but what the heck else am I going to show you? It's in the same place on your "my home" page.)
Click "add a blog post." You are now on the page when you can key in your blog. "add your blog post."
Key in your title. Right now until you get the hang of things leave the "Choose Blog Post Format" at "text only."
Enter your gripe, observation, wish, thoughts, etc. in the text area of "blog post."
On the bottom of the text box you'll see interface buttons (geek talk, sorry) to embolden your text (B), make it italic (I), to graphic interfaces that are barely visible but explained here, a capital A for you to change the color of your text, an "ab" for you to highlight your text in any color you want, a bullet point maker, a numbered list maker, a line which makes horizontal breaks, quotations to put some of your text in quotes, a horseshoe looking thing that will be covered in another blog entry, html window (which will also be explained later), emoticons, and a boxed area with a plus, film and picture picture (also covered in another blog post later).
For all interfaces (buttons that make things happen) before the horseshoe just highlight the text (mouse over) you want to effect and then click the interface you want.
Here's what the horizontal bar does:
Anyway, once you've played with these things and gotten your blog entry the way you want it there are the "optional" things.
Tagging your blog, is covered here in this FAQ blog . I believe in tagging blog entries.
"Add blog post to groups:" basically it adds your blog post to what ever groups on Stephspace you belong to if you check the boxes.
and
"Email friends about your new blog post;" you can email all your friends on Stephspace by clicking "Add your StephSpace The Stephanie Miller Show Friends" then checking all the boxes of the friends you want this sent to. You can also send your blog (or blog link) to your friends and family who are not members of Stephspace, just add their email addresses. Separate all addresses (and stephspace friends) with a comma.
click "add blog post" and you're done!
Now, currently there is not a spell check on the blog text box, nor does firefox spell check work on this right now. This spells doom for me, and I'm sure for a lot of others too. (pun intended)
How you get around this is by writing your blog post in word processing software like MSWord. Then copy and pasting it into the text box. BUT WAIT!
There is a problem with that. MSWord adds a whole bunch of unneeded and unnecessary code for our purpose, when copy and pasting it to Stephspace. It makes your blog post way larger than it needs to be. What you need to do is "wash" it before putting your wonderful words in the blog text box.
Fortunately that's really, really, easy to do.
Open "Notepad" or some similar application. Copy your MSWord blog post and paste it in Notepad. Let the highlight of your words clear in notepad, then mouse over all your words in the notepad window and copy and paste to the blog text box.

Viola! Clean and you didn't even need Tide.
Also if you find problems, misspellings, etc. with your blog entry later on you can edit it simply by going to your blog page. To get there click the "blogs" tab (six tabs from the left on the top tab line) and then by clicking "my blog" (first tab on second tab line). Find the blog you want to ammend and click "edit." You can also delete the entire entry from there by clicking "delete."
UPDATE: Please also read "FAQ ADDENDUM: This is why you HAVE TO WASH your text"

There are many places on Stephspace to add "tags." In another FAQ, How To, I discussed the differences of the profile tags and how to put them in your profile. To learn about those please go here.
Tags help organize content and make it easier to get what you want when searching. Say for instance you wanted to see all the photos of cats that have been up loaded. You can enter "cats" in the search box and here will is the result. Even if the Stephspace member did not put the word "cats" into thier title or discritption as long as it is in the tag, every picture of cats (including this blog entry) will come up as a search result.
That's difference between these content tags and your profile tags. Profile tags are descriptive of you. Content tags for video, music, photos and blogs tell what these submissions are or are about. They also help group things together, all the photos of cats, all the photos of dogs, all photoshops, all faq blogs, etc.
Using "photos" as the example, when you view someone's photo that they uploaded you will see a box to the right of the photo. It is where the "uploader" is identified, where there (hopefully) is a description or background information about the photo, and the tags of the subject categories the photo can be found under. (My model is Paul's cat Lucky)

There may also be a text box that allows the viewer to add a tag or two if there are no tags or insufficinet tags. More about that in a moment.
You can put in tags when you are uploading a photo/image, movie, audio or posting your blog by finding this field below the text box:

In the text box you can put your tags, if a tag is two or more words long put quotation marks around the group of words, other wise the program will treat them each as a single tag.
Then you can decide whether or not you want others to put in tags. The good part of allowing others to do this is that you might miss the tag where a lot of similar content is categorized. The bad part is that someone may not be paying attention to the rat in the photo and categorize it as "cats" (Sorry Clover and Kar*)
The default position is that you will allow others to add tags. If you don't want that simply click on the check mark and it will be removed.
Lastly, when tagging your media don't go hog freaking wild and put 90 million tags on it. It's distracting and suggests that maybe you are over compensating for something.
* Kar I hope you keep it that way as an example. It's not that I meant to do that, but my mistake serves a purpose now. Thanks
*
Thank you Paul for the use of your cat, Lucky. We have a Lucky cat too, and Beauty and Tribble.

Making a link in your email, profile or blog post is very easy.
Simply type something "like this"
Mouse over the words you want to make a link out of. Once you've done that you'll see a chain link appear.
Click the chain (green arrow)

and a little window will pop up.

in this window where it says "Link URL" the web address is put. YOu can either key it in or copy and paste.
"Target" is where you want the results of this link to appear. You can chose to have it appear in the same window as your post (it will replace the post in the browser) or have it open in a new window.
"Title" is the title of the link that will appear when someone holds the cursor over it but not clicking.
You can ignore "class."
You need not put enything in target, title, or class. All you really need do is put the web address in. The web address can start with "http://" or "www" etc.
To remove the link moused over the same area and click the broken chain (red arrow).

Last night I did some testing to see if play lists from playlist would be compatible with Stephspace. It is!
What are play lists? Play lists are compellations of music found all over the web. It is legal and can be found on Myspace, Facebook, many high school reunion websites, even author Stephenie Meyer has playlists on her website.
You may have seen a playlist on my profile or on the blog entry I did for the MA and RI group featuring songs you hear at Red Sox games. You’ll notice that the play list on my profile isn’t squooshed as it is for the blog entry. The reason for that is simple, the playlist widget is larger that the 410 pixel width. But it still works! Click my playlist below (stop it squeezy) and check it out.
I like play lists. I often play mine or someone else’s in the background as I multi task on the web.
To get/make a play list of your own you will need to get a free account at playlist.com (it's free)
After you have an account click “my playlists” on the top tab. Then click on “create playlist” on located on the right. Give your new playlist and name and a description, if you want. Click “create playlist.”
On the page that follows click “click here to view your playlist” and then click on your playlist.
(I am limited to two pictures in a blog post soooo I can only tell you what to do)
When your playlist is created use the search box to find the songs and artists that you want. Don’t forget to click “add” after you audition the song, so that it is added to your playlist if you like it.
When you’ve gotten as many songs as you want click “embed” on the bottom of the widget.
This will take you to a page of choices to get your playlist code. Click “Myspace.” Stephspace is patterned after the Myspace app, so this will work here. Other choices can cause a playlist to hang on the first song, with that being played over and over again. The list will not progress through.
You’ll be asked again to confirm what playlist you want the code for (2).
Step 3 asks you want autostart … choose “No” other wise your playlist may start when someone is listening to Stephanie Miller as they are multitasking around Stephspace.
You will also be asked if you want “random shuffle” this just brings the songs up in random order. Ignore choosing a skin for your playlist until you’ve had a lot more practice. And you can also choose the color of your playlist player.
Once you’ve done all that you will get the code.
Open the “html” link on the bottom of your Stephspace text box.

A separate html window will open, copy and paste the code there. If you have text above, you’ll want to put this at the bottom.
Click “update” and then complete your blog post or profile update as usual. (click on the “add blog post” button on the bottom or "profile update"

The playlist player is NOT a Stephspace widget.
To learn about doing more on Stephspace please access these FAQs and How Tos, with more coming daily.
This FAQ will show you how to put links and "personal" tags in your profile.
I'm assuming with this and all other "how to FAQ" posts that you are logged in.
First scroll up your name. (in example the green arrow is pointing to where you can find it) Right click on it and chose "open in a separate window" or whatever variation of same your browser gives you. This will allow you to try things as you read how.

Scroll down and look at your profile. This is what others see. If you've chosen to make your profile public everyone will see it. If you've chose to make your profile private, only your friends will see it. (we'll cover how to do this in another faq). The point is someone besides you will see it. Well, that is unless you make it private and have no friends.
What is being covered in this blog post is on the left side column

You can put links to your favorite websites, your business, your friends buisnesses (which I've done), place where you work (did that), a product or products that you've found useful (did that too), issues you are passionate about (yeah, I did that too).
You can only get the first 10 links to show up on your profile. More than that people will need to click to see.
There are many places on Stephspace to add "tags." Tags help organize content and make it easier to get what you want when searching. Other tags are covered here. The tags on your profile tell something about you. You can be cute, funny, let people know your sun sign, what you do (such as "IT," "educator," "singer," "congressperson" etc.
Tags and links on profiles help flesh out the people we are interacting with, and I encourage you to read the whole profile of your friends, fans, and those you come in contact with on Stephspace.
To put in links and tags on your profile click "edit profile" (yellow arrow in above image is showing you where to find it).
After you click on it you are brought immediately to "edit profile" and "basic information." The tag text box is right there. Have at it! If you tag has two or more words put quotes around it.
To add links look to the right about 4 tabs (I can't seem to get any more images on this blog entry) from "edit profile." In order they are: "edit profile theme" (don't touch that for the time being), "my rss feeds" (subject of later faq), then "my links."
Click on "my links"
On the left you will see "Add links" .. click on that
You will see a text box named "Title." Put the title of your link in there.
Below that you will see a text box labeled "URL." URL means "Uniform Resource Locator," geeks (like me) use that acronym. It basically means "web address." Put your web address in this box (you can type it in or use copy and paste). The address CAN have the "http://" in it OR just begin with "www" etc.
Once you've done all that click "save" and you will be brought back to the "My Links" page. The first link will be hard to see because it's yellow on white. But you can click "view my profile" and see if it looks right. It's also a good idea to click on your link to make sure it is pointing in the right direction, to the right place.
If not go back to the "My Links" page and delete it (also hard to see but it's on the right side). There isn't an "edit" so yes you need to delete it and start again.
Add more links by going back to the "My Links" page.
To learn about doing more on Stephspace please access these FAQs and How Tos, with more coming daily.
Okay I'm going to do this backwards from the title (you'll see why)
To join a group:
1. Make sure you're logged in.
2. Go to the "groups" tab at the top of the page (under the Steph Space pic)
3. click on it
4. look at the list of groups (they will be alphabetized soon)
5. click on the group that interest's you
6. then look for/click on the button that says "join this group"
7. click on it .. voila! you've joined (though it may take some time to show up in the number of members. It will show up on your profile page)
If the group you are interested in is not there you can request that the group be created.
To do this:
8. get to the groups page following steps 1, 2, and 3 above
THEN
9. once you are on the groups page look over to the right - in the second tab bar (right above the search text box) you will see a tab reading "request a new group" ... click on it and then request your group
To learn about doing more on Stephspace please access these FAQs and How Tos, with more coming daily.
To change your age click on the "my home" tab. (It is the second tab on the first tab line at the top under Stephanie's picture (circled in green below)

Then go to the "edit profile" tab. It is the second tab in the second tab row (yellow arrow pointing to it) click on it.
You will then see a tab bar. The first tab is titled "edit profile." After that the tabs, in order are: "edit profile theme" (don't touch that for the time being), "my rss feeds" (subject of later faq), my links (faq here), and "edit my account." This is the one you want, click on it.
Scroll down. You will see your email address, your profile photo (later faq), your name and then:

Your gender. If it's wrong change it now
Your date of birth: Plug in your correct date of birth or atleast the correct year if you aren't 49.
Then you can enter your geographic location. Everything you enter here will show up on your profile so enter as much or as little as you like. As you see I've only put in my state.
To learn about doing more on Stephspace please access these FAQs and How Tos, with more coming daily.
AlsoI'd stay away from "edit profile theme" until george gets some bugs fixed because once you do, it will make your profile text harder to read.

Can we talk?
Yes we can!
Well sorta. We can CHAT (you can get to the chat room by scrolling up and looking on the right side of the 'tabs'
